Hillcrest Place sits in the center of one of San Diego's most vibrant, walkable neighborhoods. Here's what's right around the corner.
Hillcrest runs on coffee. Within a few blocks of your front door, you’ve got everything from a two-story flagship roastery to a medieval-themed micro-café. Most open early, several stay open late, and a few have become full-time remote offices for the neighborhood’s work-from-home crowd.
The dining in Hillcrest is genuinely ridiculous for a neighborhood this size. Afghan, Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese — all within walking distance, and most of it is very good. You’ll stop cooking within a week.
After-dinner walks in Hillcrest always end at a dessert spot. Cookie shops, cupcake cafés, gelato, mochi donuts, and a vegan bakery that converts even the skeptics. Most are clustered along University and Fifth.
Hillcrest’s nightlife is one of the neighborhood’s defining features. Drag brunches, craft cocktails, dive bars, dance clubs, and a karaoke spot that’s been here longer than most of the residents. Something for every night of the week and every kind of evening.
Three major grocery stores within a 10-minute walk — that’s the kind of thing that makes car-free living actually work. Add a Sunday farmers market and a couple of specialty markets, and you’re covered.
Two major hospitals are walking distance from Hillcrest Place — Scripps Mercy (11 minutes) and UC San Diego Medical Center (21 minutes). A community health center and pharmacies round out the immediate area.
Small independent gyms, yoga studios, and Balboa Park’s trails mean you don’t need a big-box membership. The Anvil Gym has a perfect 5.0 rating and it’s a 6-minute walk from your door.
Balboa Park is the centerpiece — 1,200 acres of gardens, museums, trails, and the Zoo. It’s a short drive or a long walk from Hillcrest Place. Nate’s Point Dog Park is a favorite for residents with dogs.
Independent cinema, outdoor movie nights, world-class museums in Balboa Park, and a farmers market that’s as much a social event as a shopping trip. Hillcrest has its own cultural ecosystem.
The unglamorous stuff that makes a neighborhood actually livable — post office, dry cleaners, tailoring. We’re building out this list, so check back or let Rob know if we’re missing your favorite.
